I realize that 2008 was a pretty crappy year for a lot of people, but for me, it was darn good. The highlights include the birth of my first child (a beautiful, happy daughter), getting into a handful of top business schools, moving to Boston, starting at HBS and making a ton of great new friends. And my old company is doing pretty well, even in this tough economic environment. I've been very lucky in 2008, and I hope 2009 will be just as good.
Happy New Year.

For the second time this off-season, the Oakland A's were spurned by a big name free agent who chose to stay in the National League West. Last week, it was shortstop Rafael Furcal, who re-signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers. On Friday, it was left-hander Randy Johnson, who signed with the San Francisco Giants. The A's clearly have money to spend. Now it begs the question, who will take it?

Looking to add a left-handed bat with some pop, the A's reportedly would be interested in Bobby Abreu or Garret Anderson if they were unable to sign Jason Giambi.

It wasn't anything that happened on the field that made Game 3 of the 1989 World Series so memorable.
It was what happened minutes before the game that made the game so historic. A major earthquake rocked the San Francisco Bay Area and Candlestick Park just before the Giants were getting ready to host the A's in the Fall Classic.

For the 2008 A's, who endured countless highs and lows during a season in which they put together a 75-86 mark, Oakland resembled somewhat of a nonstop revolving door.
